a little red top and eggplant boots

Do you have a few colors that never ever make it into your closet? For me, it's pastels and shades of red and blue that don't strike my fancy. However, one can only wear so much black, grey, white, and navy. Depressing and dark is not the look I'm going for.

So, with color on my mind, I came across this silk Liz Claiborne top hidden in the $3 top rack. The neckline pleats and material were calling my name, despite the arrogant shade of red. A few minutes later, I discovered a pair of eggplant/purple-ish leather boots that just happened to be my size (LOVE when that happens). A recent fashion blogger had done a great post on the combination of red and plum, and I was willing to give these two foreign colors a try.

Top: Liz Claiborne (second hand), $3. Skirt: H&M. Boots: no brand (second hand), $15. Bag: Coach (second hand), $20.

In this shot you can kind of see the horizontal pleats. Small detail, but makes the shirt a lot more interesting!

These boots had no tag or mark in them, but the inside is a soft leather that looks pretty worn. Overall they were in great condition, and I definitely enjoy a flat boot that is both practical and trendy. And that just about wraps up my trip to the St. Alban's Opportunity Shop. Wednesday's post shows the last item of my purchases, which means... time for round two. You all better save some good stuff for me!

[suit]able prices

Considering I have never purchased a suit at retail value, I was more than willing to pay $18 for this black Sisley skirt suit (again, from the Opportunity Shop). It obviously needs to be ironed/lint-proofed before wearing, but it will definitely do the trick.

I've never had much success finding bottoms and a top that both fit. I guess it's been pure luck that some girl in DC (with her real job), does not need her perfectly nice suits anymore and is donating them. Lovely.Suit: Sisley (second hand), $18 (there is one on sale on Ebay that was originally $310). Tights: Old Navy, $6.50. Shoes: Zara.Have I inspired you to try a second hand suit? I hope so. After all, unless you plan on wearing it every day, I would rather buy a nice pair of shoes or purse to wear with such a standard {boring} outfit. Skirt suits are definitely not on my top ten list, but it's good to have one just in case.

Next up: more from the Opportunity Shop!

sweet little discount

My "professional" wardrobe needed some serious updating with my latest stint as a part-time substitute teacher. The St. Alban's Opportunity Shop was proving to be just the place when I stumbled upon a BRAND NEW, unworn, beautiful Max Studio blazer. I almost died when I saw the original price.

As I was checking out, a sweet elderly lady tried to charge me $5 for the blazer (the blazer rack is priced at $5 unless there is an added tag like above). Tax on the original price would have been more! I corrected her and happily went on my way with my latest blazer addition.

Et voila! Blazer: Max Studio (second hand), $5. Tank top: F21, $6. Pants: H&M, $30. Shoes: Zara, $30.

Next up: a wardrobe essential for $20.

6 items for $62

Last week I discovered the most amazing little thrift shop in NW DC. So amazing, I am hesitant to share with you the name and location.

However, if you promise not to raid its contents every day, you should stop by the St. Alban's Opportunity Shop located on Wisconsin Ave. (right next to the National Cathedral). Items are very reasonably priced, and the volunteers that work there are super nice. The store is small, with racks for skirts, blazers, tops, pants, and dresses. There is also a small closet full of vintage dresses and extremely nice shoes (if you are around size 8-9).

I visited the Opportunity Shop with fairly low expectations, but came out with six awesome clothing items for $62. I have already worn each piece since last week, and I of course wanted to share with you some of the outfits I put together.

Top: Express (second hand), $3. Jeans: F21. Shoes: Max Studio.

Within minutes, my second hand clothing radar was blaring (I get a tad competitive in small spaces with cheap clothing). I had a massive bag with me and a just-purchased coffee, but having full range movement was vital for the success of my shopping. After stowing my bag and apologizing too all the old women I was knocking into, I began my quest!

The first top I came across was a beautiful sheer Express top. Tucked in, the shirt doesn't look too shabby, and I love how it looks with fitted jeans.
This top was one of three, so check back soon to see the other great pieces the Opportunity Shop had in store.

In the meantime, you should:

1) try a second hand or thrift store for your Halloween costume
2) subscribe to my blog (that way I know people are actually reading!)
3) visit the Opportunity Shop and let me know what you find

That is all. Stay tuned!

flower power

Draped, wide-legged pants seemed to be a big hit this summer. At a recent summer sale in upstate NY, I came across these pants that looked too comfy to pass up. Aside from being super lightweight and different from the rest of the pants in my closet, these floral "Rue 21" pants were only $6.

Top: H&M, $6. Blazer: vintage (second hand), Pants: $6. Boots: Franco Sarto. Belt: H&M, $5.95.Need to dress up an outfit? This is probably common knowledge, but try a fitted blazer. Definitely adds a bit of professionalism when needed!

a wrap dress for less

Believe it or not, there's a downside to second hand shopping and bargain buys. Often, I end up with a plethora of random shirts, dresses and scarves that I will only wear once (my mother, boyfriend, and old roommates can attest). Piles of clothing later, its easy to forget about different items.

Yet during this bout of beautiful summer weather, I came across this printed wrap-dress from some random boutique store. A little short for work, I will definitely wear this out sometime soon. It's hard to tell, but the material is this fabulous spandex/polyester material. Stretches in all the right places, and feels great on the skin. This is starting to sound like a lotion commercial.

Anyways, I wanted to share with you a great way to recycle clothing that may fall into the "I haven't worn it in over a year/doesn't exactly fit/weird color" category.

Three choices:

1) Donate - a local Salvation Army, Goodwill, church or non-profit in your area are a great way to make sure your clothing goes to a good cause.

2) Consign - consignment shops will buy your clothes from you (usually in cash on the spot or with store credit, your choice). Don't expect the price you bought it for, usually you will receive around 20-30 percent of the original price. These items are usually name brands, depending on the type of consignment store. The best thing about consigning? Sometimes I'll earn more than I spend on new second hand pieces, making myself a nice little profit.

3) Trade - looking for something different to do with your friends? Try hosting a clothing swap. Super easy to do, and you would be surprised at what your friends are willing to give up. One [wo]man's trash is a another [wo]man's treasure!

So get going! Check out your closet and try to weed out pieces you no longer need. Don't be too hasty - that over-sized sweater or black skirt may come in handy down the road. Denim mini's and Abercrombie and Fitch can go. And if anyone is trying to do a clothing swap, you know how to reach me.

must-have mustard

It seems that plum, rust, and mustard are taking over this season's color palette. The rich colors are perfect for Fall, reminiscent of changing leaves.

After falling in love with Rachel's mustard scarf , I was determined to add a splash of mustard to my own wardrobe. Between Forever21 and H&M, the choices ranged from knit scarfs to sweater dresses. I ended up with a $14 floor-length dress, that offered endless styling-options (I told you I had a weird thing for maxi dresses/skirts).

In between styling. Would the neon yellow flats have been too much?

Dress: F21, $14. Top: F21, $12. Flats: Sam Edelman (second hand), $16.

This top has yet to be worn [by me]. Friends have borrowed, but in the past, I can never seem to work it into my entourage without it looking too... see through?
Mustard is fun to play around with. The color is almost a neutral, which essentially means it goes with anything (next time I'll try a grey blue, light grey, emerald green, or red).

With so many stores buying into mustard, no doubt this color will soon be everywhere. Why spend tons of money on one mustard piece when you could have, well, tons of mustard instead?

pas cher chic wrap-up in NYC

I wanted to wrap-up my fabulous weekend in NYC with a few more pictures of the upper east side roommates. We had a great weekend together, and I hope you all enjoyed pas cher chic in NYC as much as I did. NYC, I'll be back!
Hannah styling the infamous mustard scarf.

One of our [only] group shots.

Rachel will probably kill me for posting this, but this series would not have been complete without it.

Big thanks to Hannah and Rachel for hosting me, and thank  you my dear reader for reading!

Also, if you are interested in doing a photo shoot for pas cher chic, please contact me at jenna.m.irish@gmail.com (just a few sentences about your personal style, where you shop, where you live). I won't be doing any trips out to Montana (unless it's all expenses paid), but if you're in the DC/MD/VA area I would love to include some new faces/styles.

Merci!

pas cher chic does NYC: Jenna

Rachel and Hannah were kind enough to take a few pictures for me during my little getaway to the city. Since I refuse to bring more than one bag while traveling, some of the items below were borrowed from the girls.

Shoes: Gap Kids, Shorts: H&M, Top: AT Loft, Jacket: Gap.
Can you believe that the shirt above is a Gap XL? Never settle on one size (one of my favorite sheer tops is a maternity shirt).

Top: Gap (second hand), $2. Jeans: F21, $20. Belt: H&M, $7. Shoes: Nine West, $35

Don't miss behind the scenes footage on Wednesday. A plus!

pas cher chic does NYC: Rachel

As promised, I was fortunate to have a second fashion-forward friend grace pas cher chic.

Rachel, also an upper east side resident, has been a go-to friend for my borrowing needs. Her closet is chock full of F21 and H&M, but her eye for color and balance makes her outfits look straight out of Saks.

Some advice from the savvy-shopper? While she balances her time between thrift stores and higher-end retailers, Rachel advises to go ahead and buy more expensive pieces that will truly render you a happy woman. "Looking great makes everyone feel confident, so it's worth it." Touche!

Above, Rachel works the wide-legged pants with a fitted sheer blouse and burst of color (we bonded over our mustard obsession). Best part? The entire outfit cost less than $100.

Top: Allison Taylor (second hand), $8.99. Pants: Mlle Cabrielle, $15.99. Shoes: MIA, $49.99. Scarf: H&M, $12.99

It was COLD in the city, and Rachel was on the lookout for a coat/jacket at the Goodwill that morning. Within minutes, Rachel pulled this beauty from the racks, with a big smile: $34. Perfect condition.

When was the last time you bought a heavy fall coat for the same price as five chipotle meals? (Apologies, my monetary comparisons are often food-related).

Coat (specifically a shearling suede jacket): vintage, $34.99. Shoes: MIA. Pants: H&M, $34.99. Top: F21, $22.
Beautiful, just beautiful.
While none of us had the chance to do denim on denim, Rachel threw on this H&M jean button up to pull her final look together. A popular trend from summer, denim is a great casual add-on for a dress (add belt and boots, dress becomes skirt). Or, as Rachel models here, a jean button-up serves as a perfect layer for fall weather.

Hat: vintage. Top (denim): H&M, $29.99. Pants: Gap, $49.99. Shoes: F21, $19.99.

Round of applause for Ms. Schaub, who is showing NYC how fashion is supposed to be done. More pictures to come, check back this weekend. Everyone enjoy their Columbus Day weekend!

pas cher chic does NYC: Hannah

Please welcome my friend and fearless fashionista, Hannah Pakray!

I have been fortunate to know Hannah since freshman year at American, and as my personal fashion guise, friend, and voice of reason, I am honored to have her bold style grace my blog.

Hannah and I first thrift shopped at Value Village in Hyattsville, Maryland, where she would leave with an overflowing trash bag. This trip took place during D.C.'s first "snowpocalypse" in my friend Stacia's van. Needless to say, it was an adventure.

Two years later, Hannah mixes high-end pieces with thrift store finds. Her personal style? Classy. Edgy. Basic. I'm happy to have played a role in Hannah's wardrobe, but her unique style is all her own.

Also, nothing in Hannah's outfits cost more than $50. Shoes included!

The black snakeskin skirt and calf boots were Hannah's Goodwill purchases earlier that day. I love how she's able to throw an element of animal in each outfit, without overdoing.

Top: DKNY, $14.99. Skirt: vintage, $22. Boots: Pazzo, $25.

This look was my favorite. That bold red doesn't work for everyone, but Hannah pulls it off effortlessly.

While this H&M dress would look beautiful by itself, adding a vest, belt, and super casual boots takes the silky fabric down a notch. You may or may not be seeing me in this exact dress in the near future (what would I do without stylish friends to borrow from?). For cooler weather, throw on tights with a cardigan or oversized sweater.

Dress: H&M, $19.99. Vest: Agaci, $25. Combat boots: H&M, $29.99.Hannah wrapped up the shoot in pouring rain (they were thinking, what did we get ourselves into?). The last look was much more casual, but we loved that Hannah included a leopard scarf to spice up the ensemble. Not to mention, it was only $4.99. Hannah claims it's from a store called "Agaci," however I am convinced this could be a lie as she hoards all this amazing and affordable clothing for herself.

Shoes: Aldo, $45.99. Leggings: Express, $29.99. Top: F21, $12.99. Scarf: Agaci, $4.99.

Well folks, that's a wrap! Big round of applause for Ms. Pakray and her budget-conscious yet sassy outfits. Check back Friday for Rachel's shoot in the city.

pas cher chic does NYC

I'm really excited to share with you my first NYC thrift shopping/photo shoot. With the help of my two friends Hannah Pakray and Rachel Schaub, I've put together a series of our shopping trip and final outfits. After plenty of walking, trying on, assembling, and laughing, I bring you "pas cher chic does NYC!"

Step 1: Embark on trip to cheapest second hand store possible.
Hannah and Rachel recommended a nearby Goodwill located on 2nd avenue on the upper east side, a thrift store known to sell Louboutin's and other luxury brands (expect a line and possible disappointment).

Not too crowded for a Saturday morning, we spent a good hour or two perusing the aisles for hidden gems. Luckily, my small Asian feet were smaller than Hannah and Rachel's, and I spotted a pair of leather upper/wooden Michael Kors heels that were destined to be mine.

However, practicality ensued and I decided against open-toed heels for this recent bout of nasty weather. Because this was NYC, prices were a bit higher than what you'd pay here in DC or upstate NY, but $20 is still pretty reasonable.Step 2: Comb, comb, comb. Be thorough, be patient, and be on the lookout for stains/holes etc.

Within minutes Hannah has found a silk ruched top in eggplant. Notice the color coordination that Goodwill has provided, a sometimes helpful or overwhelming method of organization.

The starting price for most items was $7.99, ranging from expensive or vintage items to cheap stuff from Forever 21. Above, Rachel sifts through colorful blazers that are a perfect layer for Fall.

I actually have no words for how incredible this coat is. And the price? $34. Again, no words. Make sure you check back to see how Rachel ends up wearing her best deal of the day!

Indecisive as always, I grabbed random things from sheer tops (great for layering) and sweater skirts. One of the best parts of thrift shopping is you never know what to expect. Sometimes going without a plan of action, in terms of what you "need," is way more productive and exciting.

Along with being indecisive, I like things to be visually organized before trying on. Third in from the right, check out the sick flower print velvet jacket. Where do these things come from? Also included on the rack is a Kimchi dress, vintage tan suede pants, grey sweater skirt, red silk top with houndstooth clasps, cashmere sweater, reverse yellow tie-neck blouse, and a black woven sweater.

This coat was massive, but I loved the color and fabric. Camel is SO Fall! The green leather purse was also tempting, but not for $45 (Value Village would have it for half the price).

Sad thing was I only ended up buying the Edelman flats on the right. My first pair of yellow shoes! The brown Sperry's are my boyfriend's "go to" shoe, and unfortunately were a size to big. For all the men that are reading, or at least girlfriends of those men, I would strongly recommend checking out second hand stores for boat shoes. Because they have been in style for so long, there always seem to be an overabundance.

A few purchases later, we were ready to go. Everyone found something to wear for the shoot, and we were already envisioning what our outfits would be. I think the girls would agree, but there is simply no better way to spend a rainy Saturday than second hand shopping, $3 breakfast sandwiches, coffee, and taking pictures.

Stay tuned for Hannah's photo shoot Wednesday: what to expect? Animal print, classic gone sexy, unpredictable layers, and the most beautiful red dress I have probably ever seen.

more pleather please

Along with leopard, leather/pleather has been everywhere. Inspired by fellow fashion blogger Alejandra (check out her sweet blog here), I have been on the lookout for leather shorts/skirts/pants.

Forever21 never disappoints. This knee-length pleather skirt was a only $15, and I've worn it 4 out of the last 6 days. What can I say? It's suuuuuper comfy!

Bracelets: F21. Watch: TokyoBay. Ring: H&M, $4.99.

And unless someone is touching the material, real vs. faux leather is pretty hard to distinguish. Try pairing leather-looking fabric with silky, more feminine pieces. This combo usually balances the outfit and avoids creating an uber-punk/biker chick look.

Shirt: Filene's, $14. Shoes: F21, $25. Scarf: vintage, $5.95.On y va! Find yourself some pleather/leather and see what happens. Most likely, you will wear it multiple days in a row.

You can thank me later.
